Make Money By Recycling Scrap Metal From Exercise Equipment

Posted on 28 March 2018

If you’re about to get rid of some old gym equipment – hold on and don’t rush. Your best bet may be to sell that used equipment to a scrap metal dealer. Whether you’re a gym owner or a fitness enthusiast, you can make some extra money by recycling scrap metal from exercise equipment.

Scrap metal dealers actually buy used gym equipment in order to recycle the valuable metal. This includes everything from weightlifting equipment, to stationery bikes, to fitness machines, to free weights. Whatever that piece of equipment, the scrap metal can be worth some valuable cash.

Scrap metal from exercise equipment

Most sports equipment has some type of metal fabrication. You’d be surprised at the different metals and even more surprised at the value of the metal when brought to a scrap metal yard.

Hand Weights

Hand weights are usually made from iron and/or steel. And although some are made with added rubber, the main metal portion can be scrapped by weight – the more weight, the more value.

Spinning Bikes, Treadmills and Elliptical Machines

Stationary bikes or spin bikes can be scrapped for their aluminum and steel content. In fact, some stationary bikes may even have some type of electric motor inside, with valuable copper wires.

The bigger pieces of equipment, like treadmills and elliptical machines, contain valuable metals  (steel, copper, aluminum) as well as electrical motors, which are valuable for their metal wiring.

Lacrosse Sticks

For those who are involved in lacrosse, the sticks are often made of either aluminum or titanium. With enough metal volume, a good scrap yard can offer good pricing, depending on the quality.

Baseball Bats

Today, some baseball bats are made of aluminum – if they’re not manufactured with composite materials, then they do offer some value. Here again, you’ll need volume for a good payday.

Golf Clubs

Golf clubs (shafts) are made of titanium or stainless steel, while the heads are usually made from iron. It’s worthwhile checking the metal content and determining if there is enough to scrap.

Ski Poles

Ski poles (downhill and cross-country) are typically made of aluminum. They can be scrapped easily because of the ongoing value of aluminum. With enough volume, it’s a good scrap metal.
